Areen Hassan

Areen Hassan [b.1994] is a Palestinian artist based in Dubai, whose practice is rooted in heritage and identity. Working primarily with textiles, she draws on Tatreez, traditional Palestinian embroidery passed down through generations, as both material language and inherited legacy, continuously experimenting with modernising traditional methods. Through multimedia techniques she explores transparency and inverts the conventional function of materials, pushing the boundaries of textile art to speak to themes of resilience, memory and identity.

Central to her practice is a technique of her own devising, unravelling, in which threads of silkscreen-printed fabric are pulled meticulously one by one in a laborious, meditative reverse process. The fabric separates and moves, yet never breaks, rejoining and holding strong as a compelling metaphor for a people broken, yet whole; fragmented, yet beautiful. Her installations are immensely evocative to walk amongst, rippling with the air as visitors pass, at once serene and urgent, silent and screaming for attention.

A graduate in Textile Design and Art, Hassan has participated in group exhibitions across the Middle East, Europe and the US, and received the Justus Brinckmann Award at MK&G Museum, Hamburg, in 2019. Her solo shows include By Areen بيد عرين at The Art Centre, Manama, Bahrain (2022), and The Mother Thread at Dubai Design District (2022). In 2023 she was commissioned to produce a public art installation for Dubai Design Week, and in 2025 she was selected to showcase her work at Maison&Objet under Dubai Cultures Cultural Grants Programme. 

Staffordshire St presented Lamlameh لملمة; Gathering, Hassan's first presentation in the UK, in March, 2026.
