STST Assembly | Curating The OffBeat Art Club

Join Mike Hankin, co-founder of OffBeat in conversation with guest curator of The OffBeat Art Club, Wilfrid Wood, and exhibiting artists about how the exhibition was put together, their making processes and tackling the big question – what the hell is 'OffBeat Art'.

OffBeat is a folk club that uses film to explore what it means to be British today. What began as a small screening series has grown into The OffBeat Folk Film Festival, which promotes contemporary filmmakers working with ideas of place, culture and everyday life. In 2026, in partnership with Staffordshire St, OffBeat is also launching The OffBeat Art Club, inviting contemporary artists to submit work for the club’s first visual art exhibition.

Wilfrid Wood is a London-based artist working in various mediums, specialising in portraiture. He trained in graphics at Central St Martins before building latex heads for satirical TV programme, Spitting Image. Wood’s portraits span a range of media: Painted studies of families, charcoal sketches of naked men, and sculptures of political figures. He has an uncanny eye for likeness, whether or not his subjects appreciate it. From his point of view, that tension is part of the fun.
